I fully agree. I read an articl...Great blog post. I fully agree. I read an article last week on my Facebook news feed about how lyrics in music have been greatly dumbed down and the highest artists that was analyzed reached a third-grade reading level. Your lyrics are definitely not. I don't think many know the definition of "polyglot" or "octoroon."

I also agree with the arts in education. A vital resource is lost. Politicians and the corporations who benefit from Common Core (Pearson being the main one) do not educate themselves how music and art develops ALL minds. My accountant is a huge fan of Anne Sexton, and my dentist told me his favorite classes were literature classes.

My four-year-old daughter Ciara (pr. KIR-ah; my husband and I chose the Gaeli spelling because he is 99% Irish-American and proud) loves art and music. We live in an 860-foot condo we bought right before the 2008 crash, but we have taken a portion of the living room so Ciara can use it as her "art studio." I know every mother says her child is so talented, but Ciara's art work and her spatial sence is very developed for four years of age. I showed her paintings to her doctor the other day and he was taken aback.

"Did she really draw the bird?" he asked.

Ciara sings to herself constantly. On our local park swings last weekend, she was singing as my husband pushed her. Today she was singing to herself. My husband and I signed her up for age-appropriate voice lessons at the Sherwood School of Music through Columbia College here in Chicago. This is where it seems her bliss is headed. Even as baby, she hummed to herself when she was falling asleep.

Our budge will be strained, but we did not want to enroll her into the Chicago Public Schools. Our Catholic parish has an elementary school. When I went on a tour, I was struck by how the school is so focused on art. After school until parents can pick them up, they have music, dance, and reading options outside the curriculum.

I danced in high school, and played the flute from the age of 10-15. I know both benefit.

Regarding the business of music, are you on Tidal? Apple Streaming? Taylor Swift forced Apple to pay artists during the free-month trial.Laura Durnellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03036410667794657326noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13461674.post-75813357704536881002015-06-26T16:53:37.931-04:002015-06-26T16:53:37.931-04:00I earned my MFA in Writing at The School of the Ar...I earned my MFA in Writing at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I then fell in love with her poetry as you did. As I work on my first novel (third attempt. I have published short fiction), I carry the word Erica has inscribed in my books of her when she comes to Chicago for readings: fearlessly. I am on the Zipless train now as I write my novel that deal with serious subjects, one of which that is often not addressed in the mainstream.Laura Durnellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03036410667794657326noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13461674.post-37458495154698575972014-07-10T15:17:48.350-04:002014-07-10T15:17:48.350-04:00omg...what a read! I agree, that the music industry has shaped so much that people are relying on the higher end labels to produce what they want to hear.

A good quote from the movie Dreamgirls, where the artists were sitting in a room and played back a recording about patience in hard times. The owner didn't like it, cause "It wouldn't sell..." It was then said that music is about expression, but was then interrupted by the owner "music has to sell."

Hopefully in our time, we will see a facelift how music is viewed and witness a re-birth.Groovdafiedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13014432087242189919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13461674.post-46401557234997293242014-05-01T16:26:07.260-04:002014-05-01T16:26:07.260-04:00Many thx Henry! It's like saying that looking at a T-Shirt with the Mona Lisa printed on is involves as much appreciation as seeing it in person. The negation of the physical importance of the appreciation of music is perhaps the most unfortunate outcome of the digital victory, and the lack of conversation about it comes in at a close second... And while convenience is king these days (and I for one am ever grateful that music has become more portable than ever) I do miss the physical, visceral and cerebral involvement of unwrapping, unsheathing, and listening to vinyl ~ Vvanessa daouhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07913405803717094836noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13461674.post-60164659590640805792011-07-13T06:06:12.150-04:002011-07-13T06:06:12.150-04:00Thank you for the article. For example:

"It is universally acknowledged that the free-(down)loaders are not those who would normally pay for their music to begin with". What is the evidence for this assessment? I have certainly witnessed countless people claim, in person and online, that they stopped (or drastically reduced) purchasing music once when they could buy it for free.

Also, how does one explain the precipitous decline in music sales once downloading (and CD copying) became an option? If it were possible to completely stop piracy, I suspect there would be sudden increase in legal music purchasing.

All the best,
St MarkAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13461674.post-61241089231866254322011-07-13T02:11:47.455-04:002011-07-13T02:11:47.455-04:00I have a soft spot for vinyl. I still insist on buying full albums as they tell the whole story as the artist intended. Single songs seem out of context. Anyone with an "ear" can tell you that vinyl, or in the analog vs. digital debate, that vinyl and analog both carry a weight, a deep, lush warmth that one can almost swim in, especially when compared to the tin, hollow, thin, lifeless sound of a digital recording. As each both have their pros and cons, my personal choice will always be vinyl, or analog. Maybe because I was born in the 70s and I'm partial, and maybe because I crave more life in my music. Either way, the vinyl revival is no surprise to me, but it is a welcome development, and one that I am very happy about. Maybe people have grown tired of being so vapid and without soul and this is a step in the direction of reclaiming a deeper level of our humanity. Here's hoping. Thank you Vanessa, for keeping art alive.JEREMY GANNnoreply@blogger.com
